Branch president Steve Cowan opens the post-lunch activities by welcoming everyone. He makes a few announcements including the branch's acquisition of another patron, the commissioner of the Yukon, the Honourable Angélique Bernard. He then introduces Robb Watt, Rideau Herald Emeritus and the first president of our Branch, to say a few words.
Robb Watt takes the podium and recounts his experience in developing supporters and a new crest for the Honorable Janet Austin, OBC, Lieutenant Governor of British Columbia.
Steve now introduces the Society's national president Vicken Koundakjian to present the Greenwood Lecture.
Vicken lays out the future plans of the Society, including enhancement of the Bursary programme. He also announced that badges for various positions within the national executive, including the fellows, have recently been granted by the Canadian Heraldic Authority. He circulated depictions of the badges to those at the lunch.
On the left are the new badges for the national executive as granted by the CHA and to the right is an example of the badge that Society fellows can now wear.
Branch vice-president Tom Mercer presents Vicken with a gift in appreciation for his talk.
The gift is Vicken's shield etched into heavy glass. Tom had made this very impressive plaque in his studio.
After the formal activities, Vicken has a quiet chat with Robb.
Meanwhile, at the other end of the room, Tom stands in front of an impressive poster of the Society's arms, a gift to the Branch from National to allow us to further our efforts in spreading interest in heraldry. The poster retracts into the base, making it quite portable.
Another gift from National is this wonderful portrait of Her Majesty, standing in front of a portrait of her great-great-grandmother. We now need a clubhouse for no other reason than to display this grand photo!
Here is what is left of what was once a pile of over twenty heraldry books of all shapes and sizes, up for grabs by members and guests. They were pulls from the Vancouver Island Regional Library system, presumably because of lack of interest. We have our work cut out for us!
The success of the luncheon is summed up here as a guest is enjoying his Christmas card.
