Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, our 2021 Annual General Meeting was held through the teleconferencing services of Zoom, on March 6th.
There were fourteen members present, plus our Greenwood speaker. Screen captures were taken throughout the meeting but, unfortunately, most were lost due to a technical issue. The surviving three are shown below, each with a very interesting background. The first is showing John Neill in front of his recent renovation. The second is Robb Watt with a very nice maple leaf motif behind him. Finally, we have Tom Mercer in his stained glass workshop.
Branch president Steve Cowan opened the meeting and gave his annual report, summarizing the branch's activities for 2020 and, in particular, highlighting the trip he and director David Hjalmarson made to Whitehorse, the capital of the Yukon. This was followed by the treasurer's report, given by our out-going treasurer, Don Mayers. It was clear that the treasury is in good shape.
Next, Gary Mitchell took over to conduct the selection of the board for the coming year. Since there was only one nomination for each position, all positions were filled by acclamation. Don Mayers agreed to continue as treasurer on an interim basis until a replacement could be found. Shortly after the AGM, Brian Hutchison volunteered to take over as treasurer. Brian is a long-time member of our branch and, over a decade ago, was vice-president of our branch under then-president Laurie Patten. Don will stay on the board as a director. The new board is shown below:

After the board selection and conclusion of the AGM, Steve introduced our guest speaker, Gregor Macaulay, a prominent member, in fact a fellow, of the Heraldry Society of New Zealand. He is also a member of the RHSC. His topic was titled "A Survey of Heraldry and Heraldic Authority in New Zealand", which he delivered directly from his home in New Zealand. It was an interesting presentation filled with a good variety of heraldry with a New Zealand bent. He concluded with his deep wish that New Zealand would form its own heraldic authority, but felt that it was probably not going to happen any time soon. After the formal presentation, he fielded many questions from members, after which he e-received an armorial plaque from Steve in appreciation for his lecture. (The plaque will be mailed out to him.)
